If you start to notice some powdery mildew growing on your plants, there is no need to waste money on expensive chemicals. Combine baking soda with a small dollop of liquid soap and add it to water. Spray the mixture on the plants once every seven days or so until you no longer see the mildew. The baking soda is harmless to your plants and a very effective remedy.

Try using climber plants to cover up your fences and walls. Plants that climb are extraordinarily versatile, and can help hide an unsightly wall or fence, usually within one season. You may also be interested in training them over an arbor or trellis. You can also grow them among existing landscape trees and plants. Some require ties attaching them to supports, but others will attach themselves to any surface nearby. Reliable varieties include wisteria, honeysuckle, climbing roses, clematis, and jasmine.

When winter comes around, save some plants by putting them in the house. You may want to save the most beautiful or expensive ones. Dig carefully around the roots and transfer the plants to a pot.

Knee pads are absolute miracle accessories if you work in a garden with plenty of low-growing plants. Your knees will take a beating if you spend a great deal of time on the ground while tending your garden. Buy yourself a pair of knee pads to use in the garden to cushion and protect your knees.

Try dividing the irises. You can create additional irises by splitting up irises that are growing into each other's space. When the foliage dies, take the bulbous irises and lift them. The bulbs will naturally split in your hands, and after you replant them, will flower about a year later. Divide up the rhizomes with a knife. Cut out new pieces from outside the bulb and throw away the old center. There needs to be a minimum of one healthy offshoot on each of the new sprout sections. Replant them immediately.

You should think about adding evergreen plants that yield berries into your yard space. These plants will look good year-round, even during the winter, when your other plants have lost their bloom. Some evergreens that will add life to your yard in the wintertime are the American Cranberrybush, Common Snowberry, Winterberry, and American holly.

Take your time when planting seeds. You need to start by adding moisture to the soil. Next you need to spread the seeds out evenly so they have the room needed to grow. Bury them 3 times as deep in relation to the seed's size. Some seeds you won't have to bury because they need light in order to grow.

Aim to increase your property's value. Landscaping your yard will bring you a big return on your investment. A simple investment in plants can elevate your property value by as much as 20% or more. Look for hardy, low moisture plants that are naturally suited for your region.

When composting lawn clippings, leaves, and other materials, it is best to add the same amount of green, freshly-cut material as you do dried material. Examples of good green material to use for compost include grass clippings, flowers, leaves, and weeds. Dried plant material, however, can include items such as cardboard, sawdust and shredded paper. Certain substances will undermine your composting efforts and cancel out any benefits; these include meat, charcoal, ash or plants that have diseases or fungal growths.
